Whenever anyone is drafted first overall in a draft, high expectations come with it. When Matthew Schaefer was drafted first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, he too had high expectations. Schaefer would play the 23-24 and 24-25 season with the Erie Otters in the OHL, being named to the OHL First All-Rookie Team in 2024 and winning the CHL Top Draft Prospect Award in 2025. Schaefer would make a splash right away in the NHL, recording his first point in his NHL Debut on opening night. Schaefer would record his first NHL Goal on October 11th, becoming the second youngest defenseman in NHL history to score his first NHL Goal (18 years, 36 days). Schaefer would score a point in his first 6 career NHL games, making him the second rookie defenseman ever to do that. Schaefer was named NHL Rookie of the Month for October 2025 and has become the favorite candidate for the Calder Memorial Trophy.
